Marcela’s Medical Journey

Marcela was born in Brazil. She began having seizures as a newborn and started seizure medications as a small baby. Her family had a very long diagnostic odyssey and Marcela did not receive a SLC13A5 Epilepsy diagnosis until she was a teenager. She and her brother, Bernardo, were among the first diagnosed with SLC13A5 Epilepsy in the world! Over the years, Marcela has tried many different combinations of medications and has participated in various types of therapies to help her strength, coordination, and development. She attended regular school until the age of 15. Marcela is now 24 years old, continues to struggle with daily living tasks, and lives at home with her brother and their parents.
